What Does the Bible Say About Money?

Let’s talk about something that feels both deeply personal and wildly uncomfortable—money.

It shapes our choices. It fuels our goals. It can create stress or give us security. But at the end of the day, here’s the question every Jesus-follower has to ask:

What does the Bible say about money—and how should we respond?

Scripture doesn’t avoid the topic. In fact, it speaks about money more than 2,000 times, not to make us feel guilty, but to help us live in freedom, faith, and purpose.

Money Is a Tool, Not the Master

Money isn’t bad. But it can become dangerous when it takes the wrong spot in our hearts.

💰 Money Isn’t Evil—Loving It Is

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil…” — 1 Timothy 6:10

It’s not about having money. It’s about whether money has you.

💡 Money Reveals What We Value

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Our financial choices show us what we truly worship.

🚫 Money Can’t Be Your God

“You cannot serve both God and money.” — Matthew 6:24

You’ll either serve your stuff, or you’ll use your stuff to serve God.

What the Bible Says About Generosity

Generosity isn’t just a nice idea—it’s part of God’s character.

💦 Generosity Blesses Everyone

“A generous person will prosper…” — Proverbs 11:25

When we live open-handed, everyone gets refreshed—including us.

📏 Generosity Is Measured by the Heart

“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” — Luke 6:38

Giving is a trust exercise. The more we trust God, the more freely we give.

❤️ God Loves a Cheerful Giver

“Each of you should give… not reluctantly or under compulsion…” — 2 Corinthians 9:7

It’s not about pressure. It’s about partnership—with God, and with His work in the world.

Tithing in the Bible: Giving God Our First and Best

Tithing means giving the first 10% of what we have back to God. It’s not about rules—it’s about relationship and trust.

🌱 Tithing Is a Spiritual Investment

“Bring the whole tithe… and see if I will not pour out so much blessing…” — Malachi 3:10

God literally says, “Test me on this.” Why? Because He wants to show you what He can do with your faith.

🙌 Tithing Acknowledges God’s Ownership

“A tithe… belongs to the Lord; it is holy…” — Leviticus 27:30

Everything you have came from God. Tithing is just giving a small part back.

✝️ Jesus Affirms Tithing—With a Heart Check

“You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” — Matthew 23:23

Tithing matters, but so do mercy, justice, and love. It’s both/and.

Giving to the Poor: Reflecting God’s Heart

Scripture is crystal clear: God cares about the poor—and He calls us to care, too.

🤲 Kindness to the Poor Is Kindness to God

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord…” — Proverbs 19:17

When you help someone in need, you’re literally investing in heaven.

🏘️ The Early Church Modeled It

“They sold property… and gave to anyone who had need.” — Acts 2:44–45

Generosity wasn’t optional—it was the culture.

👑 Serving the Poor Is Serving Jesus

“Whatever you did for the least of these… you did for me.” — Matthew 25:40

Stewardship in the Bible: Managing What’s Not Ours

Stewardship means we manage God’s resources—not our own.

🌍 Everything Belongs to God

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it…” — Psalm 24:1

Your job, your money, your talents—it all came from Him, and it’s all for Him.

📖 The Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25:14–30

Jesus tells a story of three people entrusted with different amounts. Two invested wisely. One buried his gift. Only the first two heard, “Well done.”

🧭 Faithful Stewardship Is Required

“It is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” — 1 Corinthians 4:2

You don’t have to be rich to be a good steward. You just have to be faithful with what you’ve been given.

What Does the Bible Say About Giving?

Giving isn’t just about finances—it’s a heart posture and a way of life.

  • Giving Glorifies God
“…overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” — 2 Corinthians 9:12
  • Giving Can Be Sacrificial
The widow gave two small coins… and it moved Jesus deeply. — Mark 12:41–44
  • Giving Is a Spiritual Act of Trust
“Do not forget to do good and share with others…” — Hebrews 13:16

How to Honor God with Your Money

Want to build a more God-honoring relationship with money? Here are some simple steps to get started:

  1. Create a Budget – Know where your money is going. Give it direction.
  2. Prioritize Tithing – Put God first—not just with your heart, but with your wallet.
  3. Give to the Poor – Set aside margin to meet real needs.
  4. Avoid Unnecessary Debt“The borrower is slave to the lender.” — Proverbs 22:7
  5. Pray Over Your Finances – Ask God to lead your decisions and multiply your impact.

Final Thoughts: What God Wants More Than Your Money

God doesn’t want your money as much as He wants your heart.

When we give generously, manage wisely, and live open-handed, we’re saying: “God, I trust You more than I trust my bank account.”

And that kind of trust? It leads to peace, purpose, and joy.
